Surfing is much more than sport. Surf waves created by complex hydraulic processes are the base for the way of life in many coastal areas and tourism. Against this background, the surfing industry developed significantly. Since many years there is a strong trend, to expand surfing towards inland regions and to make waves easier accessible and more attractive. By carrying out a number of physical model tests and numerical simulations at the Innsbruck University, a technology was developed to create stationary standing surf waves. Using an adjustable wave structure it is possible to configure waves of different sizes, shapes and surf ratings. Thus the creation of river waves under changing natural conditions will be possible. For the successful completion of the project was the collaboration between hydraulic engineers and professional surfers of utmost importance.
