The Yellow River is the second longest river in China, and is the important water source for the northwest and north China. But in recent years the amount of sediment and runoff of the Yellow River basin showed a strong reduction. The influence factors of this phenomenon are: surface water consumption, the different using forms of underground water, construction of water conservation project, rain-fed vegetation, coal mining, climate change and so on. The Yellow River flow through the Loess Plateau with serious soil erosion. So the warping dams usually are made as the important water-and-soil conservation measures. There are huge number of the warping dams, of which approximately 5800 key dam (main and bigger warping dam). These key dams have the function of storing water before full of silt. So the number, location and character of storage of actual impoundment of the key dam will undoubtedly have an influence on runoff of the Yellow River. By the way of design data query, site visits, measurement and remote sensing survey , and beginning with the conception and operation mode of the key dam, this article make the research on the impoundment characteristics of all the 4798 key dam located in Tong guan above in the middle reaches of the Yellow River . The research indicated that 875 key dams are storing water in the Middle reaches of the Yellow River, which is the ratio of 18.65% as a whole. This ratio is different among tributaries because of the different regional situation and local social development. A few key dams beyond the design deposition in life are still work in water and water all the year round. These data will provide the basis for further research on its water evaporation and influence on the runoff decrease of the Yellow River.
