Xiluodu Reservoir is newly constructed in China, and the maximum 285m depth indicates vertical thermal stratification inside it. To get better understanding of its vertical thermal structure and temperature changes throughout a year, observation of vertical temperature profile in front of the dam was carried out in 2014. These data have confirmed the existence of stable vertical thermal stratification in summer and autumn. To get better view of temperature change during the months after impoundment, a two-dimensional longitudinal-vertical hydrodynamic and water quality model (CE-QUAL-W2) was employed to simulate the water level and vertical thermal structure. The data of 2013 was used to calibrate the model. And then, a working condition of regular operation year was set. The simulation result briefly depicts the thermal structure and its variation throughout a year. Beside what have been done in this research, a further study associated with the relationship between temperature structure and discharge distribution should be made to guide the management of Xiluodu Reservoir.
