Tracer test using specially designed GPS floaters was conducted to investigate surface diffusion characteristics in curved channel. Experiments were conducted in a 500 m long by 10 m wide recirculating grass-wall flume in the multi-functional river experiment station in Korea. The multi-functional river experiment station is organized with three test waterways, three test lakes, inflow water tank and water storage, inflow pump, lighting and monitoring facilities, and test laboratory. A3 waterway is for an experiment on hydraulic characteristics of river structures and vegetation. For the GPS floater tracking, the horizontal diffusion coefficient was determined from GPS floaters distribution using the moment method. The GPS floater has globular shape with 10 cm diameter to decrease disturbance around the floater. The GPS floater draft was set as 4.5 cm for floaters to be spread by the surface currents. The GPS floater was installed at the center of channel, and travel time in every three seconds. The velocities were measured using FlowTracker(Three dimensional Acoustic Doppler Velocitymeter). During the experiments measurements were taken of the water depth and flow velocities at the measuring every curved sections. It was performed in A3 waterway, and the GPS floater tracking was analyzed by observing the changes in the tracking position. Also the flow velocities were measured to calculate the horizontal diffusion coefficient.
