The application of sediment physical model has been nearly a hundred years . In a test of the sand physical model, it is very important to select the model sand with appropriate physical and kinetic characteristics, which is directly related with the similarity of the sediment movement and the change of river bed and with the accuracy of the experimental results. But most available model sands such as wood sand_coal sand and plastic sand are not satisfactory in some ways. In this paper, on the basis of the previous research and practice_the author took the expanded perlite as basic material and developed a new model sand successfully by using new technology and new technology. And then, in order to examine the property of the new type model sand, tests were conducted to study the physical property_settling velocity and incipient velocity of the expanded perlite model sand_In addition, the settling velocity can be calculated by the pattern of Dou Guoren’s formula and the incipient velocity can be simulated by the pattern of Tang Cunben’s formula. The results show that, the new model sand made from expanded perlite has good physical and motional characteristics, such as the volume weight can be adjusted according to the needs, particle size range is more extensive, grain shape is the same as natural and so on. This new model sand can meet various requirements in the model sand selection and it also has a lot of popularization and application value .
