This contribution tries to explain the relevance of several methods used in water governance studies in order to achieve sustainable and adaptive delta management. The contribution is based on several case studies from the Netherlands and South Africa which serve as examples. The contribution tries to develop a step by step approach in the way appropriate methodological choices can be made to get from conflicts to profit sharing in transboundary river basins and deltas.
