Various researchers have assessed the applicability of existing sediment transport equations against collected sediment data from natural rivers in addition to laboratory experiments. From all these studies, it can be concluded that existing equations to predict bed load transport rate only can provide a guide, and further investigations are needed in order to be able to predict bed load transport rate with adequate accuracy. This paper aims to assess the performance of the commonly used bed load transport equations in estimating the sediment transport capacity of the Ghezel-Ozan River, which is one of the most important rivers in Iran due to its high sediment load. The results suggest that the equations proposed by Julien, Van Rijn, and Engelund and Fredsøe may reasonably predict bed load transport rates in the range of measured data.
